I'm a Engineer

ABOUT ME

I started out as an accidental IT guy. Since I created my first database using Access in 2003, I haven't looked back, and even picked up a few new skills along the way. SQL (obviously!) for working with "grown-up" databases, Python for automating the boring stuff, Excel for visualizing data, PowerQuery for even better data management in Excel, and VBA for kicks. I'm always looking to pick up new skills and I'm now learning Go as a next language (I'm FASCINATED with it's concurrency). I'm always looking for new and unusual ways to utilize the skills I've been carefully cultivating.

My areas of specialization include data engineering using a variety of relational and no-SQL databases, backend development using Python Flask and Django, and geospatial development (basically, anything involving maps).

When I'm not geeking out over some new technology I enjoy working the amateur radio bands on digital modes, tinkering with one of the (too) many Raspberry Pi computers I have laying around, hiking the many trails of the Pacific Northwest, and cruising around the country with my wife, son, and 2 dogs in our 40-foot converted school bus. I also am a huge fan of rugby, along with baseball and hockey.

Please feel free to contact me at the form below, or on LinkedIn. I'm always interested in helping out on a project or just connecting with like-minded people!

This portfolio was written in HTML5 with Materialize CSS for styling. Also, elements of jQuery, FontAwesome, and Typed.JS were used for effects. A Django backend allows me to easily add projects without touching the HTML.

Radio Utilities for Python

This is an ongoing project of pure Python code with the goal of making it easy to control many common functions used in amateur radio operation on Windows PCs. Currently in early development, the code supports reading data from a serial GPS, calculating Maindenhead grid squares, and several other utility functions. Based on Python 3.9 using several parts of the standard library, GeoPy, and PyNMEAGps.

VARA Plugin

VARA Plugin for Pat Winlink

This project involves documenting the command set of the VARA software modem and reverse engineering the API. The software author has endorsed, but will not support the project by providing the data asked for. This project involves packet sniffing the system to catch and analyze what is being sent to the ports. Once the command sequence and payload have been determined, the plugin itself will be completed. Written in Golang.

More projects coming soon!
